J.R. Watkins Review | Hand and Cuticle Salve

Scraggly bits be gone – J. R. Watkins Hand & Cuticle Salve

I was having a conversation on twitter with @rhamnousia84 aka Desi Girl Does Makeup the other day about cuticles. She said she was looking for something to get rid of the ‘scraggly bits’ around her nails which really resonated with me. I don’t think I have real problem with my cuticles but I do with the dry skin on the sides of my nails which can be dry and quite sharp at times. I’ve had a go at cutting the bits off with a cuticle remover – sometimes it helps sometimes it make them worse.

I vaguely remember using J.R. Watkins products when I still lived in the States and I bought this at Target when I was there in May. I haven’t really needed to use it until the weather got colder and my hands started to dry out more. I know some people just use hand cream to soften their cuticles but I don’t find that very effective (at least not to my liking). This salve comes in a 59g tin and has a lovely smell like a meadow after it rains. This is 98.9% natural and contains some of the following ingredients: olive oil, sunflower seed oil, beeswax, and green tea leaf extract.

Hopefully you can see from the picture above the formulation is quite pliable and you don’t have to really dig into it to get it out. You do need to keep this in a cool place though otherwise it will liquefy. This melts very easily into an oily cream if that makes sense. I found the best way to use it is to put a generous amount in the nail/cuticle area and let it sit for about 10 minutes and then rub it into the nail bed and side bits. This has definitely made a difference to my cuticles and the sharp dry bits of skin around my nails but I need to use it everyday. I don’t think you can use it just once and then hope for the best. I mostly use it at work when I’m in meetings or doing funding research on the internet which requires a lot reading.

J.R. Watkins makes personal care products, gourmet foodstuffs, and natural household products. Unfortunately I haven’t found anyone in the UK that stocks the personal care range. However I found some J.R. Watkins bits and bobs in TK Maxx. So if you are happy to have a rummage through the ‘beauty’ section of the Maxx then look out for Watkins stuff!

You gotta love ‘the Maxx’ for excellent random finds! :) My cuticles take a royal battering during the Winter and go really dry. I’ve been neglecting them recently so I’ll keep an eye out at the weekend for some of this!
